Ideas For Embossed Business Cards: From Handmade To Foil Printing

What’s great about embossing is that it adds a subtle flair to a business card. Printing photos or images onto a card for example, makes the design cluttered (there is only so much space), while embossing can add an image yet still keep the card looking clean. The image stands out because of the raised 3D effect and there is a premium feel when it comes to embossed business card printing.

For a guide on how embossed printing works and design guidelines have a look at our post here: In The Workshop – Design Technique: Embossed Printing.

Design Options: One option is to leave the embossing as it is (blind embossing) without adding any ink or color to it. Here are 4 other design ideas you can use when creating embossing on business cards:

Foil Embossed Printing: This is when you apply a special foil to the embossed area. You have a choice of matte, glossy or metallic (silver, gold) foils – Foil Embossed Business Cards Showcase Gallery.

Black Card Designs: There is a certain appeal to using black card. You can use black card with emboss printing to create luxurious custom business cards – ideally with white, gold or silver text – Design Gallery: Black Embossed Business Cards.

The DIY Route: If you’d like to save some money or would like to add a handmade touch to your business cards then consider opting for a hand crank embosser. Have thick business cards printed up with your name and details, and then you can have a custom hand embosser made up with your logo or other design element – and easily emboss them yourself (you can also use this embosser to emboss notebooks, stationary, or anything else really). You can even add in a stamped image with another design element – just like the Sommelier or Chancho business card designs below  (Ideas For Creating Your Own Handmade Embossed Business Cards).

Alternative to Embossing:An alternative to having your business cards embossed is to instead have them debossed. Where embossing raises an image off of the card, debossing indents it into the card – Image Gallery: Debossed Business Cards Collection.

Combining Printing Techniques

Embossed printing can be combined with other printing techniques to create premium business card designs. Foil printing can be combined with embossing, or coloring the edges (aka edge printing) of the card like in the examples below:

The DIY Route

If you are looking to create a more rustic and handmade business card design, why not go down the DIY route. This also works out in making cheap business cards for yourself – but good looking ones. One way of doing this is to order a hand crank embosser. This allows you to place the emboss anywhere, and on any card. Here are some examples of business cards that use a hand crank embosser – while stamps are used to print the details:

You can even use ordinary household items to create an emboss:

You’ll need to make sure you get the right sort of card to make this work. Some work better than others.

Here is a DIY tutorial on how to make your own die cut metal plates to emboss with – using acid etching.

Different Ways of Creating Handmade Business Cards

The most common way to create your own DIY embossed business cards is to go to a printer and have them print out your contact details. Then have a hand embosser made of your logo or other design element which you emboss onto the cards at home – saving you a ton in printing costs. This hand embosser can also be used to emboss the front of notebooks, company stationary, certificates, and a whole host of other things. These hand embossers are fairly cheap, costing around $40 – $100 depending on the complexity of the design and size.

You can use household items to create debossings in card or the Cuttlebug is a home craft machine that embosses card.

Alternative Embossing Techniques

Making Custom Ink Stamps

Another way to create your own homemade business cards with a hand embosser is to have your contact details made into an ink stamp. Now all you need is the card – and you can start printing the entire business card at home. You can even go for multiple stamps, and use different colors for each one.

Multiple Layers of Card

A result of embossing card is that you will be left with the reversed image on the back. One way to get around this is to glue the embossed card onto another one – it can even be of a different color. In our Premium Business Cards Gallery you can see that some cards use multiple layers to create a thick card with a bold color: for example one orange card sandwiched between two black ones.

Another handmade special touch you can add to your business cards is to stack them up, put a heavy rock on top of them, and then spray paint the edges of the card – giving it a pop of color:

Image Gallery: Debossed Business Cards Collection

Debossing is when you indent an image onto the card vs having it raised which is embossing (embossed vs. debossed). One of the advantages of using deboss printing is that you can create a business card so that only one side of the card is affected. Whereas with embossing you will usually have the reverse image on the back while the embossed image is on the front – because you push the metal die onto the back of the card to create the image on the front.

There are a number of custom design options you can use with debossed printing. First there is blind debossing – this is when you just leave the debossing plain. Other options include adding add ink to the debossed area, or even foil stamp the area with metallic foils.

Here are a range of business card designs that use debossing:

Business Card Designs Using Blind Embossing

Blind embossing is when you leave the embossed area plain – there is no ink or special foils applied. You are left with a clean and elegant 3D design. Also it is much cheaper to have a blind embossed than one with a finishing on it.

DIY Route: By having a hand crank hand embosser made you can emboss your own business cards. Have your business cards printed with just your contact details and then emboss your logo onto the card at home. You could even get an ink stamp made up of your details so that way your whole card is handmade: have a look at our post here for more ideas – DIY Embossed Cards.

Dark and Mysterious: Designing With Black

Getting embossing done on black business cards adds a subtle but premium touch. The great thing about embossing is that it doesn’t clutter up the card’s design. Whereas printing pictures or illustrations takes up space and can make the design crowded. Below are a range of designs that use both black card and embossing. One thing to note is that the best black card designs use only one ink color, whether that is white, gold, silver, or another color.

One way to get custom embossed printing on the front without it showing up on the back is to use multiple layers of card. Get the first layer embossed – then bond it with the other layers of paper and card to create the full thickness of the business card – just like in the photos below:

Lov

Love Black White Business Cards

ZE

ZE Black Cards

If you want to take it a step further there is the option of foil embossed printing. This is when a design is foil printed onto the card, and then the area is embossed to create a colored 3D image.

An alternative to having embossing done on the business cards is to use debossing. The benefit here is that you can do it in such a way that only one side of the card has the image. With embossing, you will usually end up with the embossed image on the front and a reversed image on the back (unless you use multiple layers of card) – Image Gallery: Debossed Business Cards Collection.

Here is an example of a hand crank debosser being used to add the final touches to a card:

Another alternative to using embossed printing to create a 3D graphic on a black business card, is to get spot UV printing done. This will create a slightly raised impression on the card just like in the one below:

Combining Foils and Embossing For Business Card Designs

Combining emboss and foil printing adds a premium touch to any business card design. In our recent article, What Is Foil Embossed Printing, we go over the two different ways it is done (2 runs vs. a combination die).

Custom Design Options: There are two ways you can incorporate foil and embossing into a business card design. A) Have the same area of the card embossed and foil printed, or B) have design elements blind embossed (no color, ink), while others design elements are foil printed (like the Mercy or Woodsen business cards below).

Foil Printing Cards

You also have a choice in the types of foils you use. In the photos below we can see that the different designs use a variety of foils such as matte, gloss, or metallic (silver, gold).

Here are some business card designs that use foil embossed printing:

Card Designs Using Metallic Foils

Liverpool Pub

Liverpool Foil Business Cards Liverpool Foil Business Cards

Mercy

The Mercy cards uses a combination of printing techniques: there is blind embossing for the background image (where the embossed area has no ink or foil added to it – it is left plain), foil printing for “Mercy”, and then foil embossed printing for “Protects and Defends”.

Mercy Cards Mercy Cards

Here is another example of a business card using metallic hot foil stamping. Unlike the cards above, the embossed areas and foil printing are applied to different design elements.

Woodsen Design Woodsen Design

FB – Here is an example of a business card design that uses both matte (black) and gloss foils (blue):

FB Gloss Foil Card FB Gloss Foil Card Embossing Plates

Desbossing Designs

An alternative to foil embossing is foil debossing. Instead of having a graphic raised up on the card, the graphic is indented into the card (Debossed Business Cards Gallery). You can then have the indent filled with ink or foil. The example below shows the logo indented and a glossy black foil has been applied to it to create a shine:

From Blind to Edge Printing: Premium Business Card Designs

Before we get to the different add-ons you can have along with embossed printing there are 2 things that you want to start out with when creating a high quality, premium business card. First of all, it is always best to hire a top class graphic designer to design your company’s materials. Yes they can be costly, but it would be better to spend the money on them and go without the fancy printing techniques. You could even tell the graphic designers that you have a low budget, but are open minded and creative about what they can come up with (check out the DIY ideas section at the bottom of this post). The second thing is to always print on high quality thick card.

Embossed Card

Here are 5 design options for creating premium embossed business cards:

Merging Foil and Emboss Printing

This is probably one of the top premium add-ons you could do with emboss printing. A special foil whether metallic (silver, gold, etc), glossy, or matte can be applied on top of your embossed design. This creates a colored embossing like the examples below.

Anchor

Anchor Foil Embossed

Liverpool Pub

For more designs and ideas have a look at our foil embossed business card gallery.

You could always leave the embossed area plain, not adding anything to it – this is called a blind emboss. There are a lot of high quality business card designs that do this. Have a look at our gallery here for examples: Blind Embossed Business Card Designs and Ideas.

Multiple Level Embossing

The more complex and bigger your emboss design the more expensive it is to make the die. Having a multiple level emboss costs more but creates more of an impact:

Henry Business Card Design

Luxury Linen Business Cards

It is possible to create embossed cards with linen. This material is used because of the high quality texture:

Edge Printing

Another add on you could have for your business cards is edge printing. This could be a subtle color, or a bold one like the blue and green below:

Black Card

Printing on black card adds a subtle touch of class and luxury when done the right way. Combining black card with white, gold, or silver foil printing can create a striking design. Or how about just using black ink for a more minimalist design – like the business card below:

Design Guide – Alternative Materials: Linen, Metal, and Plastic Business Cards

Here are three alternative materials that you can get embossed business cards made with: metal, linen, and plastic.

Embossing Metal

Yes it is possible to emboss metal to create one a of a kind business card design. But is it cost effective? It depends on your business. Here are a number of metal business card designs:

Printing on Linen

The appeal of printing on linen is the high quality texture that comes with the material. Here are a few embossed business card designs that use it:

Using Plastic

Plastic is another expensive material to make business cards out of. However, with 3D printing becoming mainstream who knows what sort of business cards will be created in the future. A better use of money would be to hire a first class graphic designer to create your business cards for you – have a look at our Premium Embossed Business Card Gallery for some examples. Either way, here is one plastic business card that has a raised image:

Super Capacity

Another way to get a shiny, glossy business card, instead of using plastic, is to use normal card and then have spot UV finishing applied to the embossed area afterwards, like in the design below (spot UV finishing is just a clear coating that can be applied anywhere on the card):

Cheap Handmade DIY Embossing

As you see around this site, one design option that is highly recommended is getting a hand crank embosser made. These cost between $40-$100 (depending on the size and complexity of the design). The emboss design could be something decorative like flowers or birds, or it could be something more personal like a monogram or the date of the wedding. These hand embossers can be used to create a design on a napkin. They can also be used to emboss wedding invitations, programs, thank you cards, and a whole host of other items.
